It's Carnival in Trinidad & Tobago. It would have started early, early morning today with J'ouvert. This would be followed by two days of Carnival - also starting today. As I post this I imagine the revellers are home catching a few hours of sleep and getting ready to do it all again tomorrow.
Wish I was there. Since I'm not, I'll have to make due with playing a few soca tunes and reading about it.
This is a link to a bit of Carnival history.
Carnival in Haiti also started today ... I have been wondering if they would hold Carnival this year. Haven't been able to determine this ... but I did find this link giving some information on Carnival in Haiti.
I went to Haiti (Port au Prince) once many years ago. My first husband set up the trip. We stayed at a place called Habitacion Le Clerc (I think that's correct). Supposedly the home of Napoleon's exiled sister. We were served banana daquiris and lobster salad poolside while security officers with uzi machine guns stood on the walls (presumably to keep hungry people out).
No, that trip is not why I divorced him. . . but even my insensitive 22 year old eyes were shocked. Did I dream this?

I've always wanted to visit Haiti ... it started with a fascination with the music and art of Haiti - this beautiful art and music can still be made in spite of the poverty and violence that exists there. I just imagine how they could develop their arts if the people had easier lives. Maybe someday.

With all the trouble in Haiti... me-thinks they need a carnival with love at the center not hate. I am not sure what the basis for all the terror is down there. Media can distort many things. It made me sad. Thanks for the links.

Greed is the basis of most of the trouble in the world.
But that's just my opinion.
